Jon has been working in the marine industry for the past 20 years and has been a fanatical boater from the age of 10. Since first venturing out on the River Thames in a kayak Jon has tried, enjoyed and participated in virtually every aspect of boating and water sports both inland and coastal.
He progressed from kayaking to windsurfing in the early 80’s which ultimately led to the RYA recruiting him in 1996 to head the organisation’s windsurfing division. In 2005 he established the Sport Development division of RYA and built development teams to design, resource and deliver participation programmes through sailing clubs and centres throughout the UK. One of the programmes, OnBoard, introduced in excess of 500,000 young people to sailing and windsurfing over a 10 year period. Other programmes included Active Marina which continues to build the competence and confidence of boaters through accredited marinas.
In 2014 Jon was recruited as general manager to The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA), the international members association for the support and development of marinas. He is a member of the ICOMIA Marinas Group and sits on the Global Marina Institute advisory board. Since joining TYHA Jon has built a close working relationship with the Marina Industries Association and partnered with them in the re-development of the Gold Anchor global marina accreditation scheme.
